An IP camera can have power, network connectivity, management software, storage, and monitoring configured correctly—and still fail because its Ethernet plug is not securely retained.
Security installations often place connections above ceilings, inside enclosures, on poles, behind equipment, or in other locations that are inconvenient to revisit. That makes physical connection quality an important part of system reliability.
Why a broken latch matters
When an RJ45 latch breaks, the plug may still make electrical contact. The camera can appear online during testing. But without positive retention, vibration, enclosure service, cable movement, or gravity can gradually loosen the connection.
The result may be intermittent video, lost communication, or a complete outage. If the same cable carries Power over Ethernet, a loosened connection can affect both data and power. Replacement may carry a high access cost

Preventive retention deserves consideration
Security teams usually think about broken tabs after a failure. Preventive retention can be appropriate at known vulnerable points:
- Connections inside frequently opened enclosures
- Equipment exposed to vibration or movement
- Temporary camera deployments
- High-priority views where interruption carries operational risk
- Long cable paths that would be costly to rerun

Document every field repair

The repaired connection should also be evaluated under the same network and power conditions expected in service. Visual retention alone is not proof of channel performance.
The value is avoided uncertainty
The strongest economic case is not that every broken cable should be saved. It is that technicians should have a professional option when rerunning an otherwise functional cable is disproportionately expensive.
